Athletes Charitable Member Making

Impact on Mental Health

Athletes Charitable member and former NFL running back and Super Bowl champion, J.R. Redmond, is using his own story to give back to others through his Silverback Foundation. Five years into retirement Redmond battled depression eventually being diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder with Psychosis, Posttraumatic stress disorder, Traumatic Brain Injury, Post-concussion Syndrome, and Chronic Pain Syndrome.

The next phase of his life was challenging as J.R. was faced with homelessness, depression and other hardships as a result of his diagnosis. Finding proper treatment allowed him to understand how to improve his daily life, and recognize the importance of mental healthcare, especially for athletes. This passion led to the creation of the The JR Redmond Silverback Foundation whose mission is to build support for individuals who struggle with mental health issues by providing educational guidance and identifying attainable solutions. His foundation will provide counseling for depression and cognitive treatment for traumatic brain injuries. Furthermore plans for a wellness spa are in the works that will provide chiropractic care, acupuncture, massage therapy, classroom space, seminars, teaching from subject matter experts, and nutritional programming as part of a full-body, holistic approach to healing.

Redmond was recently invited to participate in the Cause San Diego Conference as a VIP speaker, moderated by the United Charitable CEO, Julia Healey with a focus on Fiscal Sponsorship.  He delivered a moving speech entitled “From the Field to Philanthropy” where he shared his own struggles with mental health and how it prompted him to establish the Silverback Foundation. JR stated, “My goal with the Silverback Foundation is to recreate the program that helped me. I couldn’t afford the treatment I received, and insurance doesn’t cover everything. Someone sponsored my treatment – and this is exactly what we are going to do – Give back what someone gave me…a chance to live!” His passion for educating and providing resources in the field of mental health is inspiring, and we look forward to his significant impact in the future. Congratulations, JR!

Wisdom from an industry expert and the leader of Athletes Charitable

“Investing in your community can yield beneficial returns on many levels. Few athletes and entertainers are aware that they can contribute tax-deductible income to a Donor Advised Fund (DAF) that a financial advisor has the ability to invest and grow over time. We view it as a philanthropic investment fund. DAF contributors can then advise donations of that money to other nonprofits that support a cause that is meaningful to them or donate that money to their own qualifying charities to continue to push their mission forward. The prospect of reducing tax obligations while making a positive impact on the community should be a no-brainer for high-earning athletes and entertainers who are already committed to building a legacy through service.”
